Update on Title Sequence

Currently I have started the editing process on the title sequence and should finish the rough cut by next week. We have converted all the videos through MPEG Stream-clip and now I am working on Final Cut Pro to bring together all the clips, edit them and eventually to add the sound. I had one small hiccup with the footage as some clips were getting cut off in Final Cut Pro. To sort it out I had to reconvert the footage and now all of it is fine. Michael is currently designing the Logo for our film company, which we have decided to call Smile Production.

Film Log Review

The filming schedule we had went quite well. When we filmed in the office we managed to finish 30 minutes early, leaving us time to prepare for traveling and setting up in Welling High Street. Filming in the office, we realised of of our shots were more difficult then expected. The most difficult was placing a stack of work in front of the camera, covering the whole scene. This took multiple tires as the stack kept falling over and some of the scene was shown. We eventually was able to do it. Whilst up Welling, unfortunately, the camera died halfway through filming so we had to use what we had and possibly go up there another time to finish off filming; I also helped filming in Welling as well. We manage to keep to our time schedule when filming at Michael's house as well and got the shots we wanted, the only problem was the lighting as it was to dark which I hope to improve in final cut pro. Overall I think the day was a success and all we need to do now is edit it.

Location

As we have modified out tile sequence idea, we would now need a new location to film. For the office scene, we found two possible rooms to shoot in. The first scene was quite a large room with table and computers, out ideas for it was to move the table and keep a table and laptop in the centre to look like a work area. However on our way out we found a great office space which looks more 'lived in' so it would look more realistic for our sequence. We have decided we are going to use this room instead.

This was the first office we looked at.

This is the office space we have chosen.

Roles of Filming

Now we have finished our storyboard and animatics, all we need to do is make the title sequence. Below is a list of roles that is required to make the sequence and who is fulfilling them.

Cinematography- Michael
Director-Michael
Actress- Amina
Location Managers- Amina & Michael
Costume- Amina
Producers- Amina & Michael
Editors- Amina
Sound- Amina & Michael

Costumes

There is only one character in our title sequence and this is our main character, Louise Brown. In the title sequence, we have her in two locations, an office and in her home. The office scene and the streets of London, Louise will be wearing smart office wear or a blazer, blouse and pencil skirt. This shows that she is professional woman who takes her job seriously, even though she hates it. In the scene's where Louise is at home she will be wearing pyjamas as they show that Louise is a laidback person. The pyjamas will have no branding or motifs on them as that could make her look childish (i.e. Whinnie the pooh pyjamas) or could make her look like a higher/ lower class then she is (Gucci pyjamas shows she is upper-class).

Order of Credits

This is our proposed order of credits in the title sequence of the film. The reason why we have not included all of the typical credits in the film is that we want to show focus to the title sequence and not to the typography in the title sequence.

  1. Working Title studio logo
  2. 'Working Title Presents'
  3. Title of film 'The Journey of Self Discovery'
  4. Cast and crew 'Eva Myles' 'Cillian Murphy' 'Rubina Ali' 'Allen Leech'
  5. Producer/ director 'Richard Curtis'

Animatics

Final draft of Title Sequence Idea

This is the final draft of the storyboards for the title sequence. We have changed this since the last storyboard draft because we believed that the previous storyboards would not work as it doesn't convey the feel good drama genre, boss shouting. This storyboard does fit the film and genre as it shows how Louise doesn't like her office job but it also shows how Louise got the idea of going to India and her preparing to go to India, and looks more light-hearted then previously.

Second Draft of Title Sequence Idea

First Draft of Title Sequence Idea

This was our first draft for our title sequence idea showing the contrast of her mundane life and horrible experiences at work compared to her dream of traveling the world and deciding on India; as you can see near the end, her dream starts effecting her work  and shows she is getting closer to it. However, this doesn't show the suffering she endues at work so we are going to add extras clips at the start to show her breakdown and finally deciding to get away and to live her dream.

Soundtrack

The soundtracks we looked at for our title sequence are:

  • West Meets East
  • Chai Wallah
  • Vipassana
  • Bombay Remix 9
  • Bombay Beach

These are the soundtracks we have chosen that we think would fit our title sequence. We have chosen that the best one out of these is the Bombay Beach because of its uplifting nature and interesting twist of western music. The soundtrack had to fit the genre and themes of the film which we believe they do.

Typography

Now we have decided our film idea, we have now started looking at the typography for the credits and title of our film. we selected out top six favourite font as and asked fifteen people what one they thought best suited our genre and themes of our film. The most popular ones was the third font which we now going to uses for the typography of our film. We got the fonts from Dafont.com

Presentation For Pitch (Improved)

Slide 1: The genre for our film is a feel good drama. We chose this genre because it is not a typical genre to be a major cinematic film and it shows variety. Although this genre is one which has won many awards for films such as The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Forrest Gump.

Slide 2: Equilibrium

a women (Louise Brown) is stuck in a dead end office job which she hates, which involves endless amount of work, unpaid overtime and sexist comments from the staff/boss in a patriarchal society. one guy who is the main perpetrator of these comments is Mike Healy She dreams that one day she could travel the world and experience new cultures and sharing her own experiences, as well as finding herself in the world she lives in, not just the office she works in.
Disequilibrium
After having a massive breakdown at work, Louise is fired from her job and kicked out of her flat shared with her friend, as she count afford to pay her rent, Louise had no where to go and decided to travel the world to get away from her depressing life in London.
Recognition
Realising she has nothing left in London, Louise uses her life saving to travel round the world to try and 'find herself' and a new purpose for her in life.
Attempt to repair equilibrium
She ends up in India where she managed to find a place to stay with a local Indian family. There, she bond a young Indian girl who dreams of becoming a teacher. The woman then has a epiphany and realises how lucky she was in London and decides to help the girl fulfil her dream buy helping girls get an education, even though the odds/government is against her. This is her new goal.
New Equilibrium
Louise managed to break though and now all Indian girls  in that village can get an education for free so all girls can fulfil their dreams of life. Louise now stays in India and lives a happy life as the founder of an organisation, which helps girls in India get an education. Louise meets a missionary there which she has a relationship with together.

Slide 3: These are the films which inspired us to create this film. READ ABOVE. After watching the title sequence and watching these films we really loved the idea of creating a feel good drama.

Slide 4: This is the main target audience for our film. This is because we believe that this target audience can relate to the main character of Louise. This age rating is more appropriate to these type of films because the experiences that the people in the film have are usually experienced by women of the aged 25-45. Women would most definitely be our main target audience because women watch this genre of film more than men because of the storyline’s associated with it. Men would be our secondary audience because they would watch them with their partners and this type of film is one which is usually a tearjerker so the man could comfort the women.

Slide 5: The film rating we have decided for our film is a 12 as it contains Swearing, Sexist remark and Scene viewers may find upsetting. The scene’s that viewers may find upsetting are usually those in which Louise visits the slums and finds the conditions they are in distressing.

Slide 6: The dates are so because the film will create hype in the UK in September which will spread around the world. This would be ready for the release date in November. This is also a good date to be released in the USA because this is around the Oscar Season. It would be released in December because this is just before the Christmas holidays.

Slide 7: The cost to produce our film is £4 million. The money will  be towards Traveling/ staying in India, Actors, Directors and the rest of the cast and crew.

Slide 8: We believe that we could achieve a gross of £9 million because we have researched into other British films and found that most of them had low profit margins. Once we researched this we then calculated how success we expect our film to be and we produced the amount of £15 million. We think this is a generous amount for the film we are creating as usually this genre is not very successful in cinemas.

Slide 9: We have chosen this studio to produce and distribute our film as it has produced multiple films in our genre which most of these films has either won or was nominated for multiple awards including the academy awards and the golden globes. Also, working title mainly produced British films, which are film is so the company would probably bring more attention to the film as it has done British films before. Our film is vertically integrated.

Most successful- Bridget jones diary: production costs: $26 million grossed $149 million
Least successful- the boat that rocked: production cost $50 million grossed $3 million (terrible reviews, delay to theatres in America yet on DVD everywhere else).

Slide 10: Richard Whalley Anthony Curtis is an English screenwriter, producer and film director, who was born in New Zealand to Australian parents. One of Britain's most successful comedy screenwriters, he is known primarily for romantic comedy films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones's Diary, Notting Hill, and Love Actually, as well as the hit sitcoms Blackadder, Mr. Bean and The Vicar of Dibley. choose him as he has done multiple rom-coms, similar to our genre. E.g Brigit Jones Diary.
